Years before he was a legend, years before he was loved, years before his name was associated with Camelot, Merlin was alone. Suffering through life in a small orphanage in Wales, Merlin hides his druid magic. But when a young knight comes to the orphanage recruiting young soldiers, Merlin is pulled into a war between a displaced prince and a tyrant king. As he copes with the burden of his own destiny, Merlin must also face the truth of his parentage as he struggles to win the love of the father he has only just met. His mystical powers soon make him a pawn in the war for the throne and his actions change the history of a nation forever.

Most books on Merlin start with him as an adult; this is Merlin as a boy. The plot combines tender moments with some extreme hardship and the kind of violence that goes with bullying and warfare. There are some fast jumps (swooping from domestic to national concerns) and demanding assumptions in the book such as times when we are "inside" Merlin and other times when he seems like we never knew him; sometimes it seemed like a page or two of explanation or background was missing. It does not try to be faithful to some of the earliest information/legends about Merlin (themselves often conflicting), but includes many of the known details (e.g., Merlin's early reputation as both a "devil child" and a precocious prophet; the tyrant Vortigern thinkng he needs to sacrifice a fatherless child to restore his crumbling fortress). I think this could be enjoyed by an older child (caveats above) but teens and adults (especially with a bent towards Arthurian legends or medieval fantasy) will enjoy it as well. Looking forward to volume II. (Btw, the e-book is a great price!)Product details

Merlin of Carmarthen edition by Kristine Papin Morris Children eBooks Reviews
I enjoyed this story. I haven't read much on Merlin before Arthur, and this made a good background story. Didn't give it five stars because of some spelling and grammar errors.
I love this book; thank God there's a second one coming out soon. If you're interested at all in Arthurian legend, Merlin, or magic, you will enjoy this book. Expertly written and crafted, the story focuses on a young Merlin just discovering who he is and learning to use and control his powers. If you've read all the Harry Potter books and are sad that they're over, READ THIS BOOK.
The sheer impossibility of such a sniveling brat to have any hope ......
Many faults but a very promising series if only he stops making Merlin such a sniveling loser!
This was and incredible and beautiful way to look into the child Merlin. It is refreshing to see an author treat Merlin something other than the most powerful being on the face of the earth.
Great book! I can not wait for the next book. Love Merlin great story line.I keep looking for the second book, have not found it yet.
I enjoyed this book very much. It explores Merlin's early formative years as a child and how he begins to learn about his magic. There are good descriptive scenes and fast dialogue. A book I will read again.
Great book. The first by the author and (hopefully) the first of a series.
The author refreshes the dusty old story of Merlin, taking it from the very beginning, and answers many questions.
The rhythm is fast paced, the dialogs are vivid and realistic, the plots are intelligently managed, and the book is a pleasure to read.
If you like well written books that are smartly narrated, you will love it.
I set my watch and warrant on it.
